BCS policy could cost USC 2004 title if NCAA finds major violations

If the NCAA deems Reggie Bush guilty, if it vacates victories in which Southern California's Heisman Trophy winner made an appearance five and six seasons ago, it appears likely the Trojans would lose their 2004 national championship, as well.

Quietly in early 2007, as the investigation into USC and alleged improprieties involving Bush and his family was unfolding, college football's Bowl Championship Series drew up a policy calling for teams' BCS appearances and BCS titles to be vacated when major rules violations subsequently are discovered and the institutions are sanctioned by the NCAA. Current BCS executive director Bill Hancock confirmed the provision Wednesday.

Hancock emphasized, "Nothing would happen until the very end of the NCAA process, including any appeals."

USC's wait for an NCAA verdict is approaching 13 weeks, the time since its hearing before the association's Committee on Infractions in February. The case involves the Trojans' football and men's basketball programs and allegations that Bush and his family and basketball star O.J. Mayo were the recipients of illicit extra benefits.

A San Diego businessman and former sports marketing agent has said he gave Bush and his family improper payments and gifts, including accommodations in a $757,000 house, while he was attending USC. Bush refused to speak with investigators, having moved on to the NFL.

USC has self-imposed penalties against its basketball program, among other things vacating 21 wins during Mayo's 2007-08 season. The NCAA could add to those and must make a determination on the Trojans' football program.

If it substantiates the Bush charges, the association could find that he played for USC while ineligible and vacate the wins in which he took part.

That would be the BCS' cue. Its policy stipulates: "When the NCAA or a conference makes a finding of violations … and imposes a sanction of forfeiture or vacation of contests in which an ineligible student-athlete participated, we will presume that vacation of participation in a BCS bowl game is warranted." That's if the player in question participated in that BCS game or in victories that led to the bowl berth.

The BCS' Presidential Oversight Committee, made up of university CEOs and currently chaired by Nebraska's Harvey Perlman, would make the call.

Also in question is Bush's 2005 Heisman and whether the sponsoring Heisman Trophy Trust would strip him of an award presented annually to "the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity." Heisman officials haven't commented.

Study: Uninsured don't go to the ER more than insured

A kiss gone awry isn't the typical route that lands a person in the emergency room, but that's just how Maggie Craytor ended up in the University of Virginia Medical Center's emergency department in August.

"She was running after her older brother Luke to give him a kiss, and she fell and got a cut right underneath her eye," says her mother, Allison. Maggie, now 4, needed two stitches. Her mother is glad the family had insurance to cover the costly emergency visit her pediatrician's office recommended.

The Craytors, a family of five with private health insurance, are just as likely to use the emergency room as people without insurance, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The aim of "Emergency Department Visitors and Visits: Who Used the Emergency Room in 2007?" was to determine the types of visitors who use hospital ERs.

The results may surprise some who believe that ERs mainly serve uninsured people, says second author Amy Bernstein, chief of the Analytic Studies Branch in the Office of Analysis and Epidemiology for the CDC and the National Center for Health Statistics.

"We were trying to show characteristics of people who use the ER. There are some perceptions. ... A lot of people think it's predominantly used by uninsured people because they don't have a normal source of primary care, but this particular brief shows this is not the case," Bernstein says.

The total number of ER visits in 2007 was 116,802,000, Bernstein says, and one in five Americans have been to the ER in the past year.

Sometimes impatience is a factor

The researchers looked at the age and race of ER visitors as well as the type of insurance they use and whether they had none at all, Bernstein says.

The key findings:

•ER visits by the uninsured were no more likely to be triaged as non-urgent than visits by privately insured patients or those with Medicaid coverage.

•Older adults, African-Americans, poor people and those on Medicaid were more likely to have had at least one visit in a 12-month period than others.

•Medicaid-covered patients were more likely to have multiple visits in a 12-month period than privately insured and uninsured patients.

•People with and without a usual source of medical care were equally likely to have had one or more ER visits in one year.

The findings that older, sicker people are more likely to use the ER and that insurance or lack of insurance doesn't matter are not surprising, says Angela Gardner, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

"People come to the ER when they need to come to the ER," she says.

One of the factors that drives people to an ER that has nothing to do with insurance is an impatience to have a non-severe problem evaluated, says Robert Fuller, clinical chief of emergency medicine at John Dempsey Hospital, University of Connecticut Health Center and School of Medicine.

"ERs offer same-day service," he says.

But sometimes a doctor may have malpractice concerns, Fuller says, which also can send patients to the ER: "Primary-care doctors can be risk-averse and have a tendency to send more patients to emergency departments rather than triage and advise over the phone."

Sometimes the ER is just faster

Kat Stein, 44, a mother of two from Philadelphia, wonders about her primary-care doctor's actions. Stein said she visited her doctor for chest pain in January and was prescribed drugs for sudden, adult-onset asthma. When the pain grew worse a few days later, her doctor couldn't see her right away.

"It felt like a brick was on my chest, so I waited in her office without an appointment. I sat for two hours," Stein says.

Eventually, she asked the office staff and they agreed she should go to the ER. Stein headed to nearby Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's ER, where she was diagnosed with a serious but treatable heart condition.

That Medicaid patients use the ER more regularly is predictable, says Frank McGeorge, a senior staff physician in the ER at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, whose ER sees a high rate of Medicaid patients — 34%.

"High Medicaid utilization is no surprise, many patients have difficulty finding primary-care providers who take Medicaid, so the ER is the only alternative," McGeorge says.

Gardner says there's one major caveat to the new report. "All of this is 2007 data, before the market crashed, before the economy went south, and before health reform. So how useful is it?"

Twilight' Drama Resolved: Cullen Family Stars Sign On For 'Breaking Dawn'

WE WAIT THE THIRD MOVIE FROM THIS WONER FUL TITLE

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will officially be a Cullen family reunion.

After weeks of reported salary negotiations for some of the supporting cast, Summit Entertainment confirmed to Access Hollywood on Wednesday that the Cullens -- Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser and Nikki Reed -- are all set to return for the vampire series' final installment.

Billy Burke, who plays Bella's father Charlie Swan, will also return.

Prior to the official announcement, Deadline reported on Wednesday that Ashley and Jackson were wrapping up their deals and other members of the Cullen family had already signed on.

The news meant avoiding another casting shake-up for the series, which replaced the villainous Victoria with Bryce Dallas Howard for this summer's "Eclipse" after Rachelle Lefevre played the role in "Twilight" and "New Moon."

"Breaking Dawn" remains rumored to be potentially split into two films, with Summit's Wednesday announcement careful to name it as a "project." An installment - whether the blockbuster franchise's finale or part one of two - is slated for release on November 18, 2011, with third film "Eclipse" arriving this summer on June 30.

Russell Crowe Storms Out Of Interview Over 'Robin Hood' Accent Questions

Moviegoers who think they detect a hint of an Irish accent in Russell Crowe 's " Robin Hood " might want to think twice before telling that to the Australian actor - his reaction might not be so merry.

On Wednesday, Russell walked out of an interview with BBC Radio's Mark Lawson at the Cannes Film Festival when he was questioned if there was a hint of an Irish accent in his latest big screen character.

"You've got dead ears, mate. You've seriously got dead ears if you think that's an Irish accent," Russell said, followed by a British slang expletive.

The 46-year-old actor continued with the interview and then paused to go back to the accent question, saying, "I'm a little dumbfounded you could possibly find any Irish in that character. That's kind of ridiculous, but it's your show."

The interviewer then asked, "You were going for Northern English?"

"No I was going for an Italian, yeah. Missed it?" Russell said laughing.

Russell is then asked about a report that while filming 2000's "Gladiator" that he didn't want to say the movie's famous line, "I'll take my revenge in this life or the next," which promptly ended the interview.

European Cup/Champions League finals in Spain

MADRID, May 20 (Reuters) - A look back at the six previous European Cup/Champions League finals held in Spain ahead of Saturday’s final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid:

1957 Real Madrid 2 Fiorentina 0

Real Madrid won the first five European Cups and celebrated the second of those triumphs with a 2-0 win over Fiorentina in front of a crowd of 120,000 at their own Santiago Bernabeu stadium on May 30, 1957.

Alfredo Di Stefano, who had scored in the 1956 final when Real beat Reims in Paris, opened the scoring with a 69th minute penalty and Francisco Gento added the second six minutes later as Real battled to retain the trophy.

- - -

1969 AC Milan 4 Ajax Amsterdam 1

Milan, who won their first European Cup in 1963 before their rivals Inter Milan took the trophy in 1964 and 1965, came back to be crowned champions of Europe for the second time in 1969 when they crushed Ajax.

The Dutch side would go on to win a hat-trick of titles between 1971-73, but on May 28, 1969, it was Milan’s day, with a convincing 4-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium thanks to a hat-trick from Pier Prati and one from Angelo Sorbrani. Johan Cruyff was in the beaten Ajax team who scored with a penalty from Velibor Vasovic.

- - -

1980 Nottingham Forest 1 SV Hamburg 0

English clubs won the European Cup for six successive seasons between 1977 and 1982 with Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest victorious in both 1979 in Munich and the following year in Madrid when the Santiago Bernabeu staged the final for the third time exactly 11 years to the day after Milan’s 1969 triumph.

John Robertson scored the only goal in the first half as Forest retained their trophy against a Hamburg side which featured England favourite and former Liverpool European Cup winner Kevin Keegan.

- - -

1986 Steaua Bucharest 0 Barcelona 0

Steaua won 2-0 on penalties

Rarely has a team been so heavily tipped to win a final and failed as Barcelona in 1986. The match, played at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Seville on May 7, 1986, was the first final that failed to produce a goal and Steaua became the first Eastern European side to win the cup after winning the penalty shootout 2-0.

- - -

1989 AC Milan 4 Steaua Bucharest 0

A final in total contrast to the deadlocked final in 1986 saw majestic Milan become European Champions for the third time, winning for the second time in Spain, crushing Steaua 4-0 at the Nou Camp in Barcelona on May 24 1989.

Ruud Gullit scored twice in the first half, Marco Van Basten added two more. Milan retained the trophy the following year when they beat Benfica 1-0 in Vienna, and remain the last team to have won the European Cup in successive seasons.

- - -

1999 Manchester United 2 Bayern Munich 1

The most dramatic ending to any European final saw Manchester United score twice in stoppage time through Teddy Sheringham and Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer to deprive Bayern of the cup that they had had one hand on from the time Mario Basler scored with a free kick after only six minutes.

Bayern dominated much of the match at the Nou Camp Stadium on May 26, 1999, but could not add to their lead.

Former UEFA president Lennart Johansson, memorably said afterwards: “When I left my seat in the stand to go down and present the cup Bayern were winning. By the time I got out of the lift at pitch level Manchester United had won. I could not believe what happened.”

Villa on way to Barca in 40-million-euro deal

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona have reached a deal to sign Spanish international striker David Villa for four years from cash-strapped Valencia for 40 million euros (49.4 million dollars), the two clubs said Wednesday.

The 28-year-old, Valencia's top scorer in La Liga with 21 goals in the campaign just ended, will be officially unveiled on Friday at the Camp Nou after undergoing a medical, Barcelona said in a statement.

Villa was the fourth best scorer in the Spanish league in the 2009-10 season behind Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Under the deal Barcelona, who won their second consecutive league title on Sunday, will have the option of keeping Villa for a fifth season.

"We think it is a good sale and necessary given the economic situation of the club," Valencia president Manuel Llorente told a news conference at Valencia's Mestalla stadium.

"As everyone knows we could have done this deal last year but we thought at that moment it was best to keep our squad together to try and get into the Champions League. We have achieved that aim and finished third in the league."

Valencia are saddled with debts of over 500 million euros. The club put off plans to build a new stadium after failing to find a buyer for their existing stadium due to the collapse of Spain's once booming property sector.

Villa had been coveted last year by both Barcelona and arch-rivals Real Madrid but the Catalan club finally secured the services of Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan in a deal which saw Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o move to the Italian side.

The striker joined Valencia from Zaragoza for 12 million euros in 2005. During his five seasons at Valencia he scored a total of 107 goals in 166 league matches.

Villa was the top scorer at Euro 2008 with four goals despite missing Spain's 1-0 victor over Germany in the final due to injury.

He is a regular in Spain's national team, having scored 36 times in 55 appearances, and is expected to make a big impact at the World Cup in South Africa next month.

Penpix of Inter Milan players

MILAN, May 20 (Reuters) - Penpix of Inter Milan’s squad for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in Madrid on Saturday:

Goalkeepers;

12-Julio Cesar 03.09.1979. The Brazilian is the undisputed number one with one of the safest pairs of hands in the game. A great shotstopper, he can very occasionally be caught out by crosses.

1-Francesco Toldo 02.12.1971. A long Inter servant, he has been happy acting as deputy but has looked short of sharpness when called upon this season.

Defenders:

4-Javier Zanetti 10.08.1973. The captain, at Inter since 1995, never stops running despite his 36 years and can play right back, left back or midfield. Never has a bad game and is likely to be left back on Saturday.

6-Lucio 08.05.1978. The former Bayern centre back has been a rock in his first season at Inter and is eagerly looking forward to tackling his ex-team mates. The Brazilian is fallible though and has a rush of blood about once every 10 games.

13-Maicon 26.07.1981. The rampaging right back has not been as effective as last term but the Brazilian still offers immense power going forward or at the back.

23-Marco Materazzi 19.8.1973. One of the few Italians in the squad, error-prone Materazzi is rarely used but wears his Inter colours on his chest.

25-Walter Samuel 23.03.1978. Nicknamed “the Wall”, the Argentine’s central defensive partnership with Lucio has been key to Inter’s success this term and the former Real Madrid man heads back to the Bernabeu in fine fettle.

26-Cristian Chivu 26.10.1980. The Romanian fractured his skull in January and has been wearing a protective cap since returning to action in March but has yet to rediscover his best form.

Midfielders:

5-Dejan Stankovic 11.09.1978. Not as key to Inter’s charge as he was last season, the Serbian still offers 100 percent commitment in the tackle and a decent goal threat.

7-Ricardo Quaresma 26.09.1983. Barely used again this season but a useful substitute to pump in late crosses.

10-Wesley Sneijder 09.06.1984. Another former Real Madrid man who has performed superbly in his first season at Inter, linking midfield and attack sublimely and impressing with free kicks.

11-Sulley Muntari 27.08.1984. Struggled to win over the San Siro faithful but adds useful bite to midfield even if creativity is lacking.

17-McDonald Mariga 04.04.1987. Kenyan signed from Parma in January who has yet to get a real taste of first-team action.

19-Esteban Cambiasso 18.08.1980. The Argentine is the beating heart of Inter’s midfield with his tackling, neat distribution and goal threat. Another man making a return to the Bernabeu.

Strikers

9-Samuel Eto’o 10.03.1981. A solid if unspectacular first season at Inter. The Cameroon striker has shown his versatility by drifting to the wing when asked.

22-Diego Milito 12.06.1979. Scoring 22 goals in his first Serie A season for Inter is some feat. The Argentine can rightfully claim to be among the world’s best “fox-in-the-box” forwards.

27-Goran Pandev 27.07.1983. A useful addition to Inter’s squad in January, the Macedonian can play wide and picks up handy positions between the midfield and attack.

45-Mario Balotelli 12.08.1990. An archetypal teenage rebel, the Italian of Ghanaian descent has clashed repeatedly with coach and team mates but has calmed down in recent weeks. Penpix of Bayern Munich players

MUNICH, Germany, May 20 (Reuters) - Penpix of Bayern Munich’s squad for the Champions League final against Inter Milan in Madrid on Saturday.

Goalkeepers:

22-Hans-Joerg Butt 28.05.1974. The veteran won the starting spot late last year and has consolidated his position with solid performances throughout the season that also earned him a Germany call-up. Cool and composed under pressure.

1-Michael Rensing 14.05.1984. Lost number one spot to Butt and will be leaving at the end of the season. Has problems with high balls, set pieces.

35-Thomas Kraft 22.07.1988. Third choice this season, Kraft will be number two behind Butt from next term.

Defenders:

5-Daniel van Buyten 07.02.1978. The powerful Belgian has lost some speed and edge this season though he is still a strong player and a danger up front who likes to score with headers from set pieces.

6-Martin Demichelis 20.12.1980. The Argentine has committed the odd howler this season but on a good day he is in complete command of the central defence.

21-Philipp Lahm 11.11.1983. Hailed as one of the world’s best right backs, Lahm can be equally effective on the other side as well as pouring forward.

26-Diego Contento 01.05.1990. A revelation this season, has grabbed every chance he was given and is challenging for a starting spot.

28-Holger Badstuber 13.03.1989. The left-footer with a fierce free kick has developed into one of Germany’ most solid defenders and has also been called up for the World Cup squad.

Midfielders:

8-Hamit Altintop 08.12.1982. Will most likely step in for the suspended Franck Ribery. A defensive-minded midfielder who also possesses a powerful right foot.

10-Arjen Robben 23.01.1984. Bayern’s inspirational winger, Robben can turn a match with one instinctive move. His trademark move is to cut in from the right and release a powerful left-footed shot.

17-Mark van Bommel 22.04.1977. Experienced midfielder who won the Champions League with Barcelona. Hard-working and hard-tackling. Reckless challenges have often seen him sent off.

23-Danijel Pranjic 02.12.1981. The Croat has improved during the season and has been a reliable option on the left wing. Can also be used in a defensive role and has a good long-range shot.

31-Bastian Schweinsteiger 01.08.1984. Has matured this season as Bayern’s playmaker in midfield with almost every offensive move passing through him.

44-Anatoliy Tymoshchuk 30.03.1979. The Ukrainian holding midfielder has been unhappy with the little playing time he has been given since joining last year. Has a powerful right foot.

Strikers

11-Ivica Olic 14.09.1979. A real workhorse up front, the Croat has scored many crucial goals this season and is always a threat. Does not need much space to score.

18-Miroslav Klose 09.06.1978. With only three goals in the league this season, the Germany international has been reduced to a bench role.

25-Thomas Mueller 13.09.1989. A Bayern youth team product, Mueller has been outstanding in his first full season with the first team. Is equally comfortable whipping crosses from the wings as he is in the role of a centre forward.

33-Mario Gomez 10.07.1985. Has failed to win a starting spot in his first season following his Bundesliga record transfer. Always dangerous in the air.

WE WAIT THIS MATCH AND WE HOPE TO BE AGREAT MATCH

By ROBERT MILLWARD, AP Football Writer

MADRID (AP)—Jose Mourinho is looking to bring long-awaited European glory back to Inter Milan on Saturday, and Louis van Gaal is aiming to guide Bayern Munich to a fifth title in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

The coaches in the Champions League final have won 28 major titles combined, and this year Mourinho will put his reputation as one of the game’s best coaches on the line against an experienced manager who has won league titles in four different countries.

Mourinho, who led Chelsea to its first English league title in 50 years, is out to lead one of European football’s biggest clubs to its first European Cup triumph since 1965. He will do so amid strong speculation that he will then walk out on the Italian club and move to Real Madrid.

Mourinho has won six league titles in Portugal, England and Italy among his 13 major successes, and the 47-year-old self-proclaimed “Special One” is one of the most sought after coaches in the game.

“In Porto we won UEFA Cup, (league) championship and Portuguese Cup. The next year we won (European) Super Cup, championship and Champions League, so we did all three,” Mourinho said during the buildup to Saturday’s final.

But despite two Premier League titles in a row, the Portuguese coach failed to achieve Champions League success with Chelsea and left the club, unhappy that Russian owner Roman Abramovich was making transfer decisions without his approval.

He eventually took over an Inter side which had dominated Serie A but failed in Europe. The owners wanted someone to end that long wait for another European Cup.

“This would be an incredible achievement because the level of the competition is so high and our road to the final was an incredible road,” said Mourinho, whose team had to play defending champion Barcelona both in the group stage and the semifinals.

Inter also beat Chelsea home and away, and his former club went on to win both the Premier League and FA Cup.

“It was an incredibly difficult way to get to the final,” Mourinho said.

Bayern also had a tough route to the final but capitalized on a little good fortune along the way.

On the brink of going out, Bayern came from behind to knock out Juventus in the group phase after a 4-1 win away from home. A disputed goal from Miroslav Klose gave Bayern a 2-1 first leg lead over Fiorentina, and the German side advanced on away goals in the first knockout round.

Bayern again appeared to be on the way out when it trailed Manchester United 3-0 in the second leg at Old Trafford. But the German club scored two to again go through on away goals.

Bayern went on to beat Lyon and reach its eighth final, then stretched its Bundesliga record number of titles to 22 and outplayed Werder Bremen 4-0 in the German Cup final. Back in November, however, Bayern was in eighth place in the Bundesliga, on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League. Van Gaal sensed then that his time was short.

“If I don’t produce, I will be fired,” the 58-year-old Bayern coach said at the time.

The Dutchman won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, so both he and Mourinho are out to join Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970 and Hamburg 1983) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997 and Bayern 2001) as winners with two different clubs.

Bayern’s players have called on all fans of Bundesliga clubs to get behind the team on Saturday because a triumph would earn the nation four spots in next season’s competition and Serie A would lose one.

Both teams are missing key players. Inter is without Brazil defensive midfielder Thiago Motta and Bayern won’t have France winger Franck Ribery. Both were sent off in the semifinals.

Inter has won repeated Italian titles with barely any Italians on its starting lineup and a side packed with talented and hugely experienced players from Brazil and Argentina, and a creative Dutch midfielder in Wesley Sneijder.

Van Gaal’s team has a strong Dutch influence, too, with Arjen Robben and Marc van Bommel playing alongside Germany internationals Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm.

English referee Howard Webb will take charge of his first Champions League final. Although a familiar face in the competition for the past few years, he has missed out on the final because Premier League clubs have made it to the previous five, making him ineligible.

NBA mock draft 2010

Everyone was watching the NBA’s draft lottery to see if the New Jersey Nets would get to add a No. 1 draft pick to the gift basket they are assembling for free agent LeBron James(notes). No such luck. The Washington Wizards landed the top pick and have some salary-cap room, but figure to have a tough time convincing a top free agent to sign on after such a tumultuous season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, who had the second-most lottery chances, might have to pass on adding another point guard. The Philadelphia 76ers jumped up to land the second pick, followed by the Nets and Timberwolves. Here’s an early look at how the June 24 draft could play out:

1. Washington Wizards – John Wall, PG, Kentucky: Move over, Gilbert Arenas(notes). Will the NBA produce its third straight Rookie of the Year who spent one year in college playing point guard for John Calipari? Wall could easily follow in line with Derrick Rose(notes) and Tyreke Evans(notes). He resembles both former Memphis guards in terms of skill, size and athleticism. Wall was a blur on the Kentucky court last season and is nearly a lock to go No. 1. He introduced himself to the college basketball world by scoring 12 of his team’s last 15 points in a win over Connecticut at Madison Square Garden early last season. Wall finished his freshman year averaging 16.6 points and 6.5 assists, but with four turnovers per game.

2. Philadelphia 76ers – Evan Turner, SG, Ohio State: This 6-foot-7 junior looks like the second coming of Brandon Roy(notes). Even after missing six games early in the season with a back injury, Turner averaged 20.4 points, 6.0 assists and an amazing 9.2 rebounds. He was even more turnover-prone than Wall, however, averaging 4.4 per game. Turner had a nice run in the Big Ten tournament. Over the course of three days, he knocked down a game-winning 40-footer against Michigan, then piled up 31 points and 10 rebounds against Illinois, followed by 31 and 11 in the title game against Minnesota.

3. New Jersey Nets – Derrick Favors, PF, Georgia Tech: As a freshman, Favors was more steady than spectacular. The 6-9 forward brings an impressive mix of size and talent that could have some people thinking about former Georgia Tech star Chris Bosh(notes). Favors shot 61.1 percent from the field and averaged just over two blocks per game.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves – Wesley Johnson, SF, Syracuse: An athletic scorer who played just one season for the Orange after transferring from Iowa State, but Johnson made it count. He averaged 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and shot an impressive 41.5 percent from 3-point range. At age 23, he is slightly older than most top-five NBA picks of this era.

5. Sacramento Kings – DeMarcus Cousins, PF, Kentucky: Some might see this as a high-risk, high-reward pick. At 6-11 and 280 pounds, Cousins is a physical specimen with plenty of offensive skills. Consistency was an issue during his freshman season, and Cousins’ numbers faded as the year went on.

6. Golden State Warriors – Ed Davis, PF, North Carolina: His body of work is limited, since Davis was a role player during the Tar Heels’ title run in 2009 and broke his left wrist last season. He tried to make a go of it, but essentially missed the final 13 games. Davis got off to a quick start as a sophomore with double-doubles in nine of his first 16 games. His father is former NBA forward Terry Davis.

7. Detroit Pistons – Greg Monroe, C, Georgetown: Monroe made a nice step forward during his sophomore season. The 6-10 center isn’t the most athletic big man you’ll find, but he averaged 16.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and a surprising 3.8 assists. One of his best games came on Dec. 8 with 24 points and 18 boards against eventual NCAA runner-up Butler.

8. Los Angeles Clippers – Al-Farouq Aminu, SF, Wake Forest: According to Wake’s media guide, Aminu’s first name means “the chief has arrived.” Aminu was one of the nation’s best rebounders (10.7 per game), but his assist-to-turnover ratio was terrible and the Deacons faded late in the season for the second straight year.

9. Utah Jazz – Cole Aldrich, C, Kansas: A solid low-post center who has made nice strides since averaging eight minutes as a freshman on the Jayhawks’ title team. Oddly enough, his numbers last season (11.3 points, 9.8 rebounds) were down from his sophomore year.

10. Indiana Pacers – Patrick Patterson, PF, Kentucky: The only non-freshman among Kentucky’s slew of first-round draft candidates, Patterson adjusted his game to fit the new recruits. After averaging 17.9 points as a sophomore, Patterson produced 14.9 points last season. His 57.5 percent shooting demonstrated his offensive skills.

11. New Orleans Hornets – Hassan Whiteside, C, Marshall: This freshman 7-footer flew under the radar, but the number that gets people’s attention is 5.4 blocks per game. While the strength of competition in Conference USA wasn’t the best available, Whiteside did score 18 points against West Virginia.

12. Memphis Grizzlies – James Anderson, SG, Oklahoma State: The Big 12 player of the year isn’t a spectacular athlete, but he was an efficient scorer last year. The 6-6 guard averaged 22.3 points, including 30 at Kansas State and 31 against Baylor, both wins.

13. Toronto Raptors – Donatas Motiejunas, C, Benetton Treviso: A typical European big man with a nice outside shot. Playing against older competition in the Italian league, the native of Lithuania averaged only 9.3 points but did shoot 56 percent from the field.

14. Houston Rockets – Xavier Henry, SG, Kansas: The burly shooting guard didn’t lead Kansas to NCAA tournament glory. He did prove to be a reliable outside shooter, though, going 41.8 percent from 3-point range. A typical up-and-down freshman, Henry averaged 20.8 points during one four-game stretch of the Big 12 season and 5.5 points in another.

15. Milwaukee Bucks – Paul George, SF, Fresno State: This athletic, skilled wing could give the Bucks a little extra scoring punch with Michael Redd(notes) coming off an injury and John Salmons(notes) possibly becoming a free agent.

16. Minnesota Timberwolves – Larry Sanders, PF/C, VCU: A 6-10 late bloomer, Sanders might help the Timberwolves’ interior defense. He didn’t play organized basketball until 10th grade, but averaged 14.4 points and 2.6 blocks as a college junior.

17. Chicago Bulls – Lance Stephenson, SG, Cincinnati: If only the Bulls could wait and see which player they might sign in free agency, then make this pick later. Outside shooting is a need and Stephenson is a tall, strong, athletic wing who could probably use another year of seasoning in college.

18. Miami Heat – Ekpe Udoh, PF/C, Baylor: Jermaine O’Neal(notes) probably won’t be back, so the 6-10 Udoh is the start of a new frontline. The Heat hope to eventually add Chris Bosh or Amar’e Stoudemire(notes).

19. Boston Celtics – Elliot Williams, SG, Memphis: Ray Allen(notes) is a free agent, so this could be a position of need for the Celtics. Williams is a good athlete who could stand to improve his outside shot.

20. San Antonio Spurs – Solomon Alabi, C, Florida State: After three years in college, the 7-1 Alabi may no longer be considered a project. The native of Nigeria has a nice shooting touch and produced double-doubles against both Ohio State and Duke last season.

21. Oklahoma City Thunder – Gordon Hayward, SF, Butler: The leader of Butler’s surprising NCAA tournament run does most everything well and should find a way to fit into the Thunder’s talented young lineup.

22. Portland Trail Blazers – Luke Babbitt, SF, Nevada: Practically unknown on the national stage, Babbitt is a remarkable shooter. The left-hander averaged 21.9 points while shooting 50 percent overall, 40 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent at the foul line.

23. Minnesota Timberwolves – Quincy Pondexter, SF, Washington: Pondexter took a giant step forward during his senior season, averaging 19.3 points and shooting better than 50 percent from the field. He turned in three 30-point games last year.

24. Atlanta Hawks – Dominique Jones, SG, South Florida: A talented scorer who might help the Hawks if Joe Johnson(notes) leaves as a free agent. The 6-4 Jones averaged 21.4 points, dropping 46 on Providence and 37 on Pittsburgh. Needs to improve his 3-point shooting, though.

25. Memphis Grizzlies – Damion James, SF, Texas: He lasted four years in college, and it’s tough to argue with James’ production. He averaged 18 points and 10.7 rebounds his senior season.

26. Oklahoma City Thunder – Gani Lawal, PF, Georgia Tech: His numbers dropped in his sophomore season, probably because of the arrival of Favors. But Lawal could add some strength to Oklahoma City’s frontline.

27. New Jersey Nets – Armon Johnson, PG, Nevada: Two Nevada players in the first round, both from Reno? This pick could make sense for the Nets. The 6-3 Johnson is a long-armed lefty with good court vision.

28. Memphis Grizzlies – Kevin Seraphin, PF, Cholet (France): This burly power forward from French Guyana is an interesting prospect, and France has sent some impressive athletes to the NBA in recent years.

29. Orlando Magic – Eric Bledsoe, PG, Kentucky: His stats weren’t impressive last season, but Bledsoe probably played out of position next to fellow freshman John Wall. Bledsoe is an impressive athlete with a decent shooting touch.

30. Washington Wizards – Willie Warren, SG, Oklahoma: After playing his freshman season with last year’s top draft pick, Blake Griffin(notes), Warren stepped up his scoring, but an injury cut his season short.
